Year 2 - Museo del Carnaval

Y2 students went on an enriching outing connected to the unit of inquiry ‘Mate or Tea: Good for You, Good for Me,’ framed within the transdisciplinary theme ‘Where we are in place and time.’ Their destination was the Museo del Carnaval, where they discovered the roots and customs of Uruguay’s carnival tradition.
As soon as they arrived, the children were drawn in by the bright decorations and the powerful pulse of candombe. This Afro-Uruguayan musical expression, marked by powerful drums and dynamic movement, plays a central role in carnival. Our guide explained its origins and why it remains such an important cultural symbol in Uruguay.
Students also participated in interactive experiences, trying on carnival costumes and learning some basic candombe steps. They explored how this music reflects Uruguay’s diverse heritage and how communities help keep these traditions alive.
To finish the day, the children shared their favourite moments, many noting a deeper appreciation for the creativity and cultural richness behind candombe and the carnival celebration. The visit strengthened their understanding of how traditions shape who we are. A warm thank you to everyone who helped make this experience happen!
