20 YEARS OF THE P.S. SCHOR AUDITORIUM
It has been 20 years since the P.S. Schor Auditorium has played a key role in the vibrant life of our School.
The state of the art multifunctional building was designed by the architectural firm 'GRC Arquitectos & Asociados' and was erected at the north-eastern end of the Senior School in 2002.
It was officially inaugurated with a concert by the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil del Ministerio de Educación y Cultura. On 15th March 2005, to honour a man who made such a profound mark on the School, the Auditorium was dedicated to the memory of Mr P.S. Schor on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Who was P.S. Schor?
Percival Samuel Schor, known to his pupils as “El Ave” was born in Liverpool on March 12th, 1905 and went to Cambridge Medical School. Mr Schor came to Uruguay to teach English, Latin and Science, and became Headmaster in 1929. During WWII he left to work in the Department of Naval Intelligence at the Admiralty and returned in 1946, resuming his post as Headmaster in 1947. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1959 for his services to British education.
He died at the age of 62 in 1967.
In the dedication ceremony, Ms Victoria Cooper, then Chair of the Board of Governors, hailed P.S. Schor as “a pioneer of British ideas of education in Uruguay”.
The occasion was also marked with musical performances by staff and students. The unveiling of the portrait of Mr Schor that now decorates the entrance of the Auditorium was one of the highlights of the ceremony.
The P.S. Schor auditorium has housed many of the most significant moments of the lives of our students: opening nights and avant première of over 40 plays, talent shows, graduations, MUN debates, conferences, IB examinations, and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come.
